What is Pagerank?
Google "Pagerank" represents the importance of a website or blog in relation to other sites on the World Wide Web. Websites are assigned a Pagerank of between 0 and 10, where 10 is the highest ranking which can be achieved. Very few sites indeed have a Pagerank of 10; indeed a Pagerank of about 4-5 is considered good ranking for a weblog!
Pagerank is determined by the number of links to and from a particular site, amongst many other factors. A site which receives lots of links from higher ranking sites will in turn receive a good Pagerank itself; on the other hand, a site which has very few links (or links from untrustworthy sources, such as spam sites) will have a very low Pagerank.
How you can improve your Pagerank
In order to prevent the system from being cheated, Google maintain secrecy over the actual algorythm used to determine Pagerank. However, SEO experts believe there are a few trustworthy methods which can help to improve your blog/website's Pagerank:
- Write good quality posts/content
- Update often, preferably at least 5 times per week
- Comment on other blogs and answer comments on your own
- Use titles effectively as this can aid in search engine placement
- Use link text effectively, to make it clear what a link is pointing to.
- Feature keywords throughout your articles, particularly in page titles and introductory paragraphs.
Above all, do not become too concerned with your Pagerank! If you write good quality content, eventually your Pagerank and visitors will increase. Don't be fooled into paying out lots of money for schemes which claim to increase your Pagerank dramatically: often these are simply scams, or become branded as spamming sites, which can actually decrease your Pagerank!
Google seems to update it's Pagerank allocations about every three months, so be patient and eventually you will acquire a decent rank for your site.
